Overview

The Lemosho Route is widely considered the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro. It approaches the mountain from the west, crossing the stunning Shira Plateau before joining the Machame route. The 8-day itinerary allows for excellent acclimatization, making it one of the safest routes with the highest summit success rates.

8-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
2,100m to 2,650m

Drive to the gate and trek through the pristine rainforest to Big Tree Camp (Mti Mkubwa). Look out for Colobus monkeys!

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
2,650m to 3,610m

We emerge from the rainforest onto the vast Shira Plateau. The views of Kibo peak open up.

Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
Acclimatization Walk

A gentle day crossing the plateau. We explore the Shira Cathedral before settling in at Shira 2 camp.

Day 4: Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco
High: 4,600m

Crucial acclimatization. Climb high to Lava Tower for lunch, then sleep low at the scenic Barranco Camp.

Day 5: Barranco to Karanga Camp
Barranco Wall

Climb the famous Barranco Wall. A fun scramble leading to Karanga Valley.

Day 6: Karanga to Barafu Camp
Base Camp

Short hike to base camp. Early dinner and rest before the midnight summit push.

Day 7: Summit Day!
5,895m Uhuru Peak

Reach the roof of Africa at sunrise! Descend to Mweka Camp for the night.

Day 8: Descent to Mweka Gate

Final descent, receive certificates, and drive back to Moshi.
