Overview

The Marangu Route is known as the "Coca-Cola" route and is the oldest, most established route on Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers sleeping huts in dormitory style with mattresses, making it a popular choice for those who don't want to camp. It follows the same path up and down.

6-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Sleep in Huts (2,700m)

Register at the gate and trek through the rainforest to Mandara Hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
2,700m to 3,720m

Leave the forest for the moorlands. First views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo
Zebra Rocks Hike

Spend an extra day at Horombo to hike to Zebra Rocks for acclimatization.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
3,720m to 4,700m

Cross the alpine desert "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo. Early sleep.

Day 5: Summit Day!
5,895m Uhuru Peak

Midnight start. Pass Gilman's Point to Uhuru Peak. Descend back to Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Descent to Marangu Gate

Final descent to the gate to collect your certificate.
